K. L. SAIGAL DISCOGRAPHY
by Michael Kinnear

K.L. Saigal

“Kundan Lal Saigal, often abbreviated as K. L. Saigal (11 April 1904 – 18 January 1947), was an Indian singer and actor who is considered the first superstar of the Hindi film industry which was centred in Kolkata during Saigal’s time. Saigal’s unique voice quality which was a mixture of baritone and soft tenor was the benchmark for most of the singers who followed him. ” Wiki

The recordings of K.L. Saigal have remained popular since the first release of – H27h – in February 1933, and by and large the majority of K.L. Saigal’s recordings have remained on the catalogues of Hindusthan Musical Products (and Varieties Syndicate) Ltd., or The Gramophone Company (of India) Ltd, in either 78 rpm, single play, extended play and long play and in later years on cassettes through a number of issues by other companies to whom the product has been licensed for issue.

It will be noted that after considerable research – a few matrix numbers are still wanting – and there may be occasional issues that have escaped notice. It is known that there are several ‘pirate’ releases of K.L. Saigal’s recordings available on the market – produced by manufacturers in either Singapore and Dubai and also a variety of ‘pirate’ cassettes issued in India of rather questionable quality. These ‘pirate’ issues are not legitimate issues and therefore are outside the scope of this discography.

Unfortunately, it has not been possible to access files and documents of the Hindusthan Musical Products (and Varieties Syndicate) Ltd., to find the recording dates of K.L. Saigal’s recordings, but it may be presumed that most recordings were taken at Hindusthan Musical Products, Ltd,’s main studio which was located at 6/1 Akrur Datt Lane, Calcutta.

The recordings made by K.L. Saigal – for Hindusthan Musical Products, Ltd., are indicated by the matrix letters prefixed HSC and HSB. There may have also been some recordings taken of K.L. Saigal at the studios of New Theatres, Ltd., 30 Chandi Ghosh Road, Tollygunge, Calcutta, but data on any such recordings has not been found to date.

Recordings made by K.L. Saigal other than for Hindusthan Musical Products, Ltd., were taken by The Gramophone Company, Ltd., at their studios in Dum Dum, Calcutta or at Bombay.

The recordings of K.L. Saigal taken by The Gramophone Company, Ltd., may be identified by their matrix numbers which are prefixed by the letters OMC, OMD, OML and OMF, – again more research is required to be carried out to verify the actual dates of such recordings – the data for which may possibly have already been destroyed.

The catalogue numbers for HINDUSTHAN RECORD issues – apart from their own are indicated by the addition of either 11- to the number or a prefix letter of -G, indicating that the source of the recording was from The Gramophone Company, Ltd. – most often with both 11 and G as part of the number.

It will be seen from the label examples that K.L. Saigal’s recordings appear on:
