The Gramophone Company's Persian Recordings - 1899 - 1934The Gramophone Company's Persian Recordings 1899 - 1934

A discography of recordings taken in Persia by The Gramophone Company and its successor concerns, from 1899 to 1934.  With a history of the activities of various recording companies who operated in Persia and the sessions conducted at Teheran and London of Persian repertoire.

With a supplementary discography of Persian recordings taken by the Columbia Graphophone Co., Ltd., between 1928 and 1934.  Between 1935 and 1947, there were no recording sessions undertaken in Iran by Electric and Musical Industries, Limited, or its associate companies.  However, in 1947, the company arranged for some six hundred recordings to be taken under the auspices of Sherkat Sowt Iran, Limited, of Teheran.  Approximately two hundred recordings were produced equally for the ‘His Master’s Voice’ – ‘Columbia’ and ‘Odeon’ labels. The discographic documentation for the ‘His Master’s Voice and ‘Columbia’ labels have now been included in the Supplement section of this volume.  With appendices on numbering blocks and matrix serials.   With illustrations in the text.

This discography of Persian recordings taken by The Gramophone Company, its successor concerns and affiliated companies has arisen out of my extensive research into the Indian repertoires of the same recording companies.

In order to isolate the numerous recording sessions undertaken by these companies in India, it has been necessary to establish, wherever possible, the beginning and end recordings taken by the various recording experts or operators, as they were known. These recording experts were required to travel from country to country, and city to city, to conduct the task of successfully recording, whom-so-ever, the companies had arranged to be recorded at the pre-arranged sessions.

The recording of Persian repertoire could in fact be separated into three distinct zones: Persian recordings taken in Persia, Persian recordings taken outside of Persia, in neighboring areas, such as the Caucasian and Trans-Caspian regions, and thirdly, Persian recordings taken in India and Afghanistan.

Information about these recordings has been compiled from several sources, including registers of recordings, the printed catalogues and in many cases the actual discs. Most of the materials used in this research were held at EMI Music Archives, London, or at the premises of The Gramophone Company of India, Ltd., Dum Dum. I should state, however, that in many instances, the materials held at both places were neither complete nor comprehensive, and thus some required information remains lacking.
